David was trained as a painter in South Africa and was primarily known for his politically-motivated fashion, art and activism, from his anti-apartheid designs in the 1980s to his Reason8 clothing label in the 2000s in the United States.
This curation project mainly concerns his later years, from his cancer diagnosis in 2008 to his death in 2014. During this period David lived in a house on Lincoln Parkway, in Somerville, MA. In this refuge he created most of the pieces we are presenting here. The house on Lincoln Parkway became known as “The Memeway”, for its ability to channel creativity and to foster connections among its inhabitants and visitors.
Initially restricted to canvas, David’s art soon spread to the walls and floors, and then came back full circle. David used to say: “Everything has its place and everything comes home eventually”.
Don’t be scared, come inside!
